The evaluation of Faculty Development Programme (FDP) by the research assistants in the programme*

This study aims to investigate how the research assistants participating in the Faculty Development Program (FDP) evaluate the programme based on their perceptions and experiences. Fourteen of participants are in the master and the rest is in the doctorate. Ten of participants are having education in Marmara University and the rest is having education in different universities. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. In the study, a qualitative descriptive approach was used to obtain information regarding the existing situation. The questionnaire comprising ten open-ended questions as well as a demographic questionnaire comprising seven questions were used as the qualitative data collection technique. The opinions of the participants were grouped according to themes and a content analysis was conducted to uncover themes. According to the findings of the study, the participants indicated several problematic issues: The participants underlined the fact that they had to sign contracts during assignment and stressed that the Turkish Council of Higher Education (CHE) delayed allocation of funds for each FDP research assistant and language barrier was high and they were forced to commute between the host-university in which they pursued graduate studies and their home-university where they were officially employed. Furthermore, they indicated that there were problematic issues which arose from the problematic implementation of CHE law. The participants stated the frequent changes in the legislation which was concerned with the handling of the programme and expressed that the faculty members could not provide sufficient guidance and support. However, the participants indicated that FDP was a great opportunity for their academic and personal development. Moreover, they stressed that FDP provides a tenure track faculty position which promises permanency and acknowledged that they were largely satisfied with the fact that there was no discrimination between the research assistants who were previously employed and the new research assistants participating in FDP.
