In this research, we aimed to examine the quantitative properties of university journals in terms of some journal quality criteria related to developing academic publishing in Turkey. This study aims to contribute to the field of academic publishing which does not have sufficient number of studies in our country. The sample of the study consisted of 463 journals indexed in DergiPark platform that belong 45 universities. In the study covered by the screening model, the content analysis technique was used and the collected data were analyzed by SPSS statistical package software. According to the results of the research, among the universities in DergiPark, Istanbul University has a leading role with the number of academic journals. Also there is a regular increase in the number of journals published nationwide from the past to the present. In terms of published journal numbers, past to today, Social and Human Sciences are always at the forefront in subject areas. When the distribution of the journals covered by the research is examined, it is seen that journals in the field of Social and Human Sciences are in the first place. In addition, the number of journals published in two different languages is higher than the number of journals published in a single language. There are academic journals published in six different languages besides Turkish and English and the fact that the majority of the journals have more than 10 referees are other outstanding findings of the research. Due to the inadequacy of studies in the field of academic publishing in Turkey, further study is required in this area. Especially, it may be useful to compare open access journals in terms of quality measures, scientific competences and several quantitative indicators.
Keywords: Academic journals, higher education, journal publishing, science.
