The Analysis of University Women's Research Centers Web Sites: Logos, Symbols, and Activities

*This study was presented as an oral presentation titled "An Analysis of Women's Research Center Web Sites from a Feminist Perspective" at the 2nd Conference on Higher Education Studies held in Antalya on October 12-14, 2017.
The first Women's Problems Research and Application Center in Turkey was established in 1989 at Istanbul University. Then with a slow rise during the 1990s, the number reached 6, and gaining momentum during the 2000s, the number of women's centers reached 87 as of 2018. These developments have emerged as a result of the Council of Higher Education's encouragement on the one hand, and the increase in the number of women's problems and the search for solutions to these problems, on the other hand. The spread of these centers is perceived as a positive development; however, there has been no research on how active these research centers are, how up-to-date they keep their websites, and what activities they organize, and what their logos might mean. Aiming to fill this gap in the literature, this study examined these centers with a systematic approach analyzing their web sites in three time periods, from December 2016 to January 2018. The logos, colors, symbols, and types of activities used by the centers, which have a website, were examined and the viewpoints of the centers and how they handle women's issues were determined. 81 of 87 women's research centers have a website, but these websites are not always active. There are 36 logos of the centers, and the color purple is the most-frequently used color in the logos, while symbols such as female face and female body are also used. More than half of the centers that have a website are not actively using those websites. The most commonly shared activities on these websites include seminars, panels, interviews, and social and cultural events.
